Join the I2SL Student Showcase for Sustainable Laboratories!

I2SL’s Circular Economy for Labs Community of Practice (CoP) is hosting a showcase for students to

demonstrate the work they are doing to promote sustainable laboratory practices or processes at

campuses, companies, and other organizations. Student interns or part-time employees who are

currently enrolled full-time at the undergraduate or graduate level can participate.

Students will give a brief, virtual talk during a special CoP showcase over Zoom April 17 from 12:00 to

2:00 p.m. Eastern. Each student selected to participate will have five to seven minutes to talk about the

work they are doing, either through an internship or as a job, to make laboratories more energy-efficient,

resource-efficient, or environmentally sustainable.

Following are just a few examples:

  • Green chemistry projects to reduce the environmental impacts of research.

  • Lab cleanups, space assessments/optimization, or shared equipment.

  • Energy- or water-efficient system or equipment (e.g., freezers) upgrades and efforts.

  • Lab building benchmarking, assessments, and performance improvements.

  • Specific projects supporting green labs, Smart Labs, or waste reduction in labs.

Please note this is not a showcase for scientific or sustainability research projects; work must be occurring in practice in the laboratory environment. Download this flier to post in labs, share with student interns, or distribute to research departments.

Following the I2SL Student Showcase April 17, a winner will be chosen to receive free registration and a travel stipend to attend and present a full 20- to 25-minute session at the I2SL Annual Conference in Boston September 14-16, 2026.

To apply to present at the Student Showcase, students should fill out the form here; forms will be evaluated for relevance and qualification; qualified students will be notified in early March. Applications are due March 1 at 11:59 PM PST. If you have questions about the competition or what you are planning to present, please email info@i2sl.org.
