New England
The I2SL New England Chapter, which formed in December 2013, serves Massachusetts, Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, and Connecticut to further I2SL's goals and promote the environmentally responsible design, construction, and operation of resource-conscious facilities dedicated to scientific education, healthcare, and research. Our primary objective is to enable the best possible sustainable design and operational practices through the active participation and ever-growing support of industry professionals within the northeast. I2SL New England draws upon the enormity and diversity of professional, corporate, and institutional expertise within the region.

Demystifying BERDO & BEUDO
January 21, 2026
Kristen Brozowski, PE of WS Development and Maria Navarro of Buro Happold gave a fantastic presentation about how BERDO and BEUDO ordinances apply to laboratory buildings, including a discussion of ordinance requirements, compliance strategies, decarbonization tactics, and real-world project lessons.
Jennifer Ballew of City of Cambridge joined to answer questions about BEUDO.
Gordon Sharp of the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories joined to present the I2SL AIM tool, and how it can help with carbon reduction strategies.
More about BERDO and BEUDO:
BERDO : “is a local law that aims to reduce air pollution and greenhouse gas emissions generated by large buildings in Boston. Building owners subject to BERDO are required to report their buildings’ annual energy and water consumption. Starting in either 2025 or 2030, they will also need to comply with building emissions standards (i.e., emissions limits). These emissions standards decrease over time, with all buildings expected to reach net-zero emissions by 2050.” https://lnkd.in/gNZRS5nX
BEUDO : “Cambridge has committed to eliminating its emissions of greenhouse gasses — the carbon pollution that causes climate change. Buildings that use fossil fuels are one of the biggest sources of carbon pollution. ... The Building Energy Use Disclosure Ordinance requires certain properties to track, report, and reduce their emissions.” https://lnkd.in/gRJnZKQz

I2SL NEW ENGLAND - What's Next?
October 8, 2025
I2SL New England met for a night of networking and brainstorming about upcoming events. We heard lots of exciting ideas for lab tours, educational seminars, and social events. We are looking forward to some collaborative events with other local organizations, like Built Environment Plus and Cambridge Sustainable Labs.
I2SL President Gordon Sharp joined us to answer questions about the upcoming 2026 I2SL Annual Conference at Encore Casino in Boston and to share an update on Labs2Zero, the new AIM software, and the Fume Hood Challenge.

The chapter for its Annual Conference Recap and Poster Session to highlight the topics presented at the 2022 I2SL Annual Conference in Pittsburgh by our local peers. Topics included reducing embodied carbon, improving safety and sustainability, air change rates, commissioning, complying with energy codes, CFD, I2SL Best Practices update, achieving low carbon in cold climates, and addressing carbon in life sciences.
The chapter hosted an in-person tour and discussion of the newly renovated and expanded Science Center at Wellesley College. Having just completed the three-phase, multi-year project that includes a new greenhouse, renovated science labs and a timber frame addition, it was a great opportunity to tour and learn from the design team how they achieved LEED Platinum.
The New England Chapter held its Annual Conference Recap on to highlight the topics presented by New England-based speakers at the conference in Atlanta in 2021. Attendees learned more about and discussed the latest happenings at the forefront of lab sustainability.
The New England Chapter offered a Green Chemistry Teachable event with live Q&A with the speakers. Attendees had the opportunity to chat and network with others, and then viewed three presentations originally given at the 2020 Virtual I2SL Annual Conference.
