Defining a New Standard for Laboratory WELLness and Sustainability

Western Kentucky University is leading the nation in Sustainability and Wellness at the Ogden College Hall Science Building. Utilizing an integrated design process the University is achieving a WELL Certified and LEED Gold building with 50% less energy than the typical Laboratory. The team leveraged synergy between WELL, LEED and High Performance Design coupled with culture change to enhance student success, wellness and safety. The building has created scientific moments of learning for occupants with WELL and LEED principles.

Learning Objectives

  • Understand and put into practice the role of an integrated design process and clear design goals in designing a WELL Certified and LEED Gold building with 50% less energy than the typical Laboratory;
  • Describe the synergy between WELL, LEED and High Performance Design while maintaining a very tight budget;
  • Understand how to enhance student success and safety through LEED and WELL metrics in a higher education teaching laboratory; and
  • Put into practice the ability to create scientific moments of learning with WELL and LEED principles.


Dan Chaney, LEED AP, is a capital construction project manager for Western Kentucky University, where he has worked for the past 13 years. Dan obtained his BS in Civil Engineering Technology with an emphasis in Construction Management from WKU. He has managed two LEED certified projects, with a third currently underway. Dan has been fortunate to be a part of a team that has been transforming the campus for the past two decades.

Tracy Steward joined CMTA‘s Louisville office in 2010. She has a BS in Mechanical Engineering from Colorado State University and an MBA from the University of Louisville. A Principal at CMTA she leads engineering design teams through collaborations with architects and construction management implementing sustainable, energy efficient, healthy building design strategies. She leverages her MBA to incorporate business decisions related to high performance design.
