Life-Cycle Driven Master Planning: A Case Study of Repurposing Campus Buildings

Continuing our 2016 presentation about life-cycle driven master planning this case study examines the reuse of an existing historic structure facing radical technological change manifested in the newly renovated Mudd Hall at Northwestern University. Building construction technologies have advanced since Mudd Hall was built in the 1970s as have research environments. The presentation will examine sustainable redevelopment and renovation as much as applying high tech design to high tech research.

The renovated building will house a variety of uses:

  • High energy intensity laser labs for materials research, requiring closely monitored humidity control.
  • Large public spaces, including a modernized engineering library.
  • Shelled laboratory space that provides planning agility for future recruitment programs.

The presentation will provide lessons learned from the following design challenges:

  • Deciding between demolition and reuse for existing but outdated buildings.
  • Evaluating the usefulness of historic buildings and updating their functionality.
  • Designing laboratories collocated with other uses, a mixed-use building.
  • Respecting and reusing the past, minimizing waste.
  • Sustainable campus development.
  • Measuring carbon embodied in existing buildings.
  • Designing enclosure improvements for renovations.
  • High performance design of building shell, labs, and mechanical systems.
  • Controls and energy management.

Our presentation will provide tools and metrics to help research facility managers understand the decision process of renovating and reusing existing buildings that reduce construction and operational costs while being responsible stewards of research campus and organizations.

Biographies:

Matt brings more than 20 years of professional experience as a project manager and architect for higher education facilities.  He has an understanding of sophisticated teaching and research environments and the building systems needed to create them.  As a project manager, he is responsible for overall project continuity including communication with the client, consultants, and internal team; project understanding; approval process; project records; and staff recruitment and development.

Rick is currently a project manager with Affiliated Engineers, Inc., leading engineering teams in the planning, design, and construction of sophisticated MEP systems for complex and diverse building types in the pharma/biotech, higher education, and federal research market sectors. With AEI for 26 years, his clients include the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers, U.S. Department of Homeland Security, MilliporeSigma, Promega, Shire, and Northwestern University.
