Benchmarking and Energy Optimization Opportunities for Lab Facilities

This presentation will provide attendees with a framework for utilizing energy data to benchmark and target potential existing building commissioning and energy optimization opportunities in lab facilities. The presentation will focus on informing attendees on how to leverage energy data to scope potential opportunities from both a macro-level (whole building consumption) and micro-level (sub-meter) perspective.   

The presentation will provide definitions and examples of applications of utilizing macro-level utility data to compare consumption data to screen opportunities using publically available benchmarking resources and Labs 21 Benchmarking Tool from LBL. Attendees will be shown an example of how these benchmarking comparisons can be used to develop potential savings estimates in order to present this data to facility leadership staff. Examples of potential opportunities will include a review of results from 8 USDA research lab facilities in the Midwest.

Attendees will leave the presentation with an improved ability to educate and inform building owners on potential energy optimization opportunities based on various types of utility data available. Micro-level utility data will be discussed related to effective measurement and verification planning and targeted energy optimization project scoping.
