2015 Offsite Tours

There were two offsite tours at the 2015 I2SL Annual Conference.

Evening Tour of the J. Craig Venter Institute

Venter Institute

Tuesday, September 22, 5 p.m. to 10 p.m.

The J. Craig Venter Institute (JCVI) is a state-of-the-art, carbon-neutral laboratory, located on the campus of the University of California, San Diego. This LEED Platinum building utilizes a variety of sustainable features, including rainwater harvesting, use of regional materials, chilled beam technology, and sustainably harvested wood. 485 kW of roof-mounted photovoltaic panels generate the entire electrical load of JCVI. Roof gardens and native low-water landscaping create natural habitats for local wildlife and minimize maintenance of the facility.

Architectural Tour of the Salk Institute

Wednesday, September 23, 3:30 p.m. to 5:30 p.m.
Salk Institute

Dr. Jonas Salk, inventor of the polio vaccine, had a vision to create a research facility that would encourage scientific discovery and meet the ever-changing needs of science. He directed the world-renowned architect Louis Kahn to design a space emphasizing openness, natural light, and building materials that could last for generations. Today, the institute's 29 unfinished concrete and teakwood structures join together to form an inspiring collaboration environment.
