The International Institute

for Sustainable Laboratories (I2SL) is devoted to the principles of sustainable laboratories and related high-technology facilities, from design to engineering to operation. Through worldwide partnerships and the exchange of technical expertise, I2SL will encourage the development of high-tech facilities that address the rapid pace of science, medicine, research, and development in an ever-changing and dynamic environment.

Advancing sustainable laboratories globally.

  • Mission: To engage all stakeholders in advancing the safety and sustainability of laboratories and other high-tech facilities globally.

  • Vision: I2SL will be the global leader and primary resource connecting all stakeholders and providing information and education to ensure safe, sustainable laboratory design, operation, and use.

As host of the I2SL Annual Conference, formerly the Laboratories for the 21st Century (Labs21®) Annual Conference, and workshops, I2SL facilitates a network of technical capabilities to address global needs in the following areas while incorporating a whole-building approach to sustainable design of laboratories and other high-tech facilities. These capabilities include:

  • Providing infrastructure assessments

  • Offering technical assistance

  • Sharing new technologies through customized training and workshops

  • Assisting with project charettes

  • Developing case studies and best practices

Why Laboratories and Other High-Tech Facilities?

By expanding upon the Labs21 program, I2SL maintains that laboratory and high-tech facilities demand concentrated attention in the effort to create more sustainable buildings. With their extensive requirements for health and environmental management, security, and resource consumption, laboratories and other high-tech facilities present significant challenges to the building sector in terms of their design, construction, operation, and use. More so than conventional building types, these sophisticated facilities must interrelate at the highest level of life-cycle performance. The challenge for architects, engineers, and other building professionals is to design and construct the next generation of laboratories to address both sustainable construction practices and contemporary standards of comfort, security, and safety. As such, their potential for improved energy efficiency, renewable energy sources, and other sustainability practices provide the greatest opportunity and justification for whole-building design and sustainability goals.
