I2SL Sustainable Laboratory Times

Issue 9 - October 2009

In This Issue:

I want to extend my sincere thanks to all who participated in and attended the Labs21 2009 Annual Conference, and the Labs21 Tech Fair vendors who continue to enrich the event with their technology and services displays. The conference continues to be a leading forum for sharing and discussing sustainable practices for laboratories and other high-technology buildings, both nationally and internationally. I also want to acknowledge Dr. John Lechleiter, chairman, president, and chief executive officer of Eli Lilly and Company, for his keynote remarks on steps to ensure U.S. leadership in research and development. Furthermore, I would also like to recognize and once again congratulate the 2009 Go Beyond Award winners, whose leadership and innovation provides example for the entire Labs21 Community.

Through the dedicated contributions of many, this year’s conference continued its tradition of showcasing the laboratory industry’s significant accomplishments, new information, products, and services in moving toward laboratory sustainability. It also engaged participants in a new set of initiatives that I2SL continues to champion. These include carbon neutral R&D campuses (with the National Renewable Energy Laboratory), energy sub-metering strategies (with Schneider Electric and others), creating operations and maintenance training opportunities for high tech buildings (with Laney College), building information modeling in facility management (with JE Dunn Construction), and the Laboratory Facility Guidelines for Planning and Design (with the American Institute of Architects). I hope each of you will consider these topics and contribute your expertise to the initiatives related to them so that we can enhance each one's value to the laboratory community.

I am pleased to tell you that conference presentations are now online and conference attendees should have received an e-mail with instructions for downloading the presentations. Audio recordings of the presentations will also be available, and information on obtaining those will be included in the e-mail you receive. Be sure to view the presentations soon, as after December 31, they will no longer be available for free. If you weren’t able to attend the conference, presentations will be available to you for a small fee. Please visit I2SL’s website for more information on purchasing access to these exciting presentations.

The value of Labs21 depends greatly on your high level of expertise and knowledge. You make this program work. With EPA and DOE, I2SL is committed to providing you the forum for promoting and sharing your contributions to the sustainable goals of Labs21.

Labs21 Conference Updates

The Labs21 2009 Annual Conference took place September 22—24, in Indianapolis, Indiana, and once again was a great success. Be on the lookout for more news and followup from the conference in the Times. We will continue the conversations begun there at the Labs21 2010 Annual Conference, which will take place September 28—30, 2010, in Albuquerque, New Mexico.

I2SL would like to give a special thanks to all of our 2009 Conference Sponsors, who helped to make this year's event one of the best yet!

Need a Good Read? Check out I2SL's E-Library!

These days, it's known that fume hoods can be one of the biggest energy consumers in the laboratory. However, there are a lot of different factors that go into the amount of energy needed to properly run fume hoods. Often, there are many variables that can affect daily operation. In his white paper, Joseph Marian of American Auto Matrix discusses the factors affecting fume hood energy consumption and highlights different case studies exemplifying these factors. Mr. Marian also gave a presentation summing up these factors at the Labs21 2009 Annual Conference. Read on in the E-Library!

Ask Your Lab Question

News You Can Use

New ANSI/AIHA Standards

The Accredited Standards Committee Z9 on Ventilation Systems is
proposing two new standards for development. The Z9 committee has approved the formation of subcommittees for both standards, and now seeks new members.

BSR AIHA Z9.12 Design, Operation and Maintenance of Combustible Dust Collection Systems

This standard will apply to dust control systems with combustible solids that are a fire, deflagration, explosion, or detonation hazard. This standard will augment the content of other Z9 and will offer prudent practice regarding:

  • Analysis of systems for combustible dust hazards
  • Design guidance to mitigate combustible dust hazards
  • Maintenance recommendations to ensure systems operate per original design intent

The subcommittee chair is Lee Hathon, and the vice chair is Theodore Knutson.

BSR AIHA Z9.13 Design, Operation, Testing and Maintenance of Laminar Flow Fume Hoods

This standard will apply to laminar flow fume hoods (LFFH) that use filtered supply air and ducted exhaust to protect products inside the hood from external contamination and exhaust hazardous effluents from the building. This standard will provide guidelines for design, operation, testing, and maintenance of LFFH. LFFH are complicated exposure control devices that must be designed and operated properly to provide both product and personnel protection. At present, there are no standards that provide guidelines for design, operation, and testing. As such, there is little consistency between LFFH and how they operate. In addition, there is no guidance on methods to conduct tests to ensure proper performance or to monitor and maintain reliable operation. This standard will provide the necessary guidelines to improve performance of LFFH and ensure better protection for personnel working with potentially hazardous materials.

The subcommittee chair is Thomas C. Smith, and the vice chair is Dr. Gerhard Knutson.

All notices for public comment will be published in the ANSI Standards Action publication as well as on the AIHA website. If you have any questions, please feel free to contact AIHA Program Manager, Standards, Mili Mavely.
