Issue 3 - March 2009 In This Issue:
Greetings! March brings not just flowers blooming but also opportunities with I2SL and Labs21. We're continuing to grow our efforts with the sub-metering initiative, and encourage those with specific experience in this area to contribute to our discussions. Please feel free to contact me for any additional information about I2SL's work in sub-metering. If you think this information could be valuable to the whole community, think about presenting at the 2009 Annual Conference. We're very excited to begin reviewing submissions for presentations at this year's conference. If you're interested in presenting, I encourage you to submit an abstract before it's too late—the deadline for the Call for Presenters has just been extended! Sincerely,

Just Announced: Labs21 Advanced Course in the Northeast and Canada I2SL is very pleased to announce a Labs21 Introductory Course: High-Performance, Low-Energy Design will be held in Canada this summer. The event will be held as part of a two-day event with LabWize, Inc. on June 9, 2009, in Winnipeg, Canada. More information, including how to register, will be available soon! Labs21 will once again partner with NSTAR and the Massachusetts Energy Efficiency Project (MAEEP) to bring a Labs21 Advanced Course to the Boston area. The Labs21 Advanced Course: Laboratory Ventilation and Design delves deeper into sustainable design with a specific focus on HVAC and low-pressure drop ventilation systems. The course will take place at NSTAR's facility in Westwood, Massachusetts, on June 16, 2009. I2SL's Spotlight On...Lab Crafters, Inc., Winner of I2SL's 2008 Go Beyond Award for a Manufacturer Lab Crafters has supported Labs21 since the early days of the program, both as an exhibitor in the Technology and Services Fair and as a proponent of manufacturing processes and office protocols that are in line with the Labs21 Approach. Lab Crafters manufactures high-performance fume hoods that consume up to 50 percent less conditioned air than traditional fume hood designs, which are guaranteed by test results from ASHRAE, and provide a safer operating environment for the user. Additionally, Lab Crafters developed a presentation that explains the environmental impact of traditional fume hoods and shows how high-performance fume hoods are a more efficient and environmentally responsible alternative. Learn more about Lab Crafters' Go Beyond Award and the organization's advancements in sustainable laboratory design. Be sure to visit Lab Crafters in booths 34 and 37 at the 2009 Technology and Services Fair!
Laboratory Leaders!Jim Coogan, a valued member of the I2SL/Labs21 community and instructor of the Labs21 Introductory and Advanced Courses, recently had his paper published in Lab Manager Magazine! You can also find the paper in I2SL's E-Library. Don't miss the oppotunity to learn from this laboratory leader—Jim will instruct the Labs21 Advanced Course: Laboratory Ventilation and Design on June 16 in Westwood, Massachusetts. Ask Your Lab QuestionI2SL continues to increase its level of support for the laboratory community. If you have questions geared toward increasing sustainability in your laboratory or high-performance facility, submit them to I2SL and they could be featured in the Sustainable Laboratory Times for consideration by the entire Labs21 community. We are still accepting answers to last month's question about sub-metering. Please submit them to I2SL or view answers! This month's question is for operations and maintenance professionals: Have you used any preventative or predictive maintenance strategies for HVAC components that have been successful? Have an answer? Submit it to I2SL. I2SL Around the Industry:University Sustainability and Green Laboratory Discussion ACHEMA 2009
