I2SL Sustainable Laboratory Times

Issue 7 - July 2009

In This Issue:

There's a lot going on this summer as we head into the final months before the conference. If you have not yet viewed the Labs21 Conference agenda, it's time you do! The agenda provides a preview of the information-packed Labs21 2009 Annual Conference, including many expert presentations and significant laboratory discussion topics. From the growing implications of IT-based research and climate neutral research and development campuses, to operating and maintaining sustainable facilities, to laboratory security and energy sub-metering, the conference topics will once again provide the best comprehensive coverage of laboratory sustainability available. Beyond these, there will be open discussions on international collaborations, the international student design competition, and development of Laboratory Facility Guidelines for Planning and Design. So make your plans now and don't miss out on your opportunity to engage your peers on the many key issues the conference presents.

Add Your Expertise to AIA's Comprehensive Guidelines for Planning and Design

The American Institute of Architects (AIA) and I2SL invite the Labs21 Community to hear an update on their collaborative project to create a Laboratory Facility Guidelines for Planning and Design. This project, an update and expansion of the 1999 AIA Guidelines for Planning and Design of Biomedical Research Laboratories, will provide guidance for a variety of laboratory types and will include strategies for energy and environmental sustainability. During this meeting, members of various guidelines committees will convene, along with others who are interested in participating in this process, to identify funding and discuss next steps and responsibilities for development of the guidelines. Learn more about the guidelines on I2SL's website. If you are interested in becoming involved in the development of these guidelines, please contact I2SL. Learn who is already involved with this effort.

Paul Mathew is a scientest at LBNL, where he focuses his research on energy use in buildings. Paul has been an integral member of the Labs21 Team since its inception and is a valued member of the Labs21 Community. Paul played a pivotal role in the development of the Labs21 Energy Benchmarking Tool as well the Environmental Performance Criteria, which the United States Green Building Council has accepted as valid sustainability credits for its Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design rating system. Paul continues to remain an important member of our community and will present a number of topics at the upcoming Labs21 2009 Annual Conference, as well as instruct an updated version of the Labs21 Introductory Course during the pre-conference training sessions. Need a Good Read? Check out I2SL's E-Library!

The American National Standards Institute (ANSI) /American Society of Heating, Refrigerating, and Air-Conditioning Engineers (ASHRAE)/Illuminating Engineers Society of North American (IESNA) Standard 90.1 provides minimum requirements for energy-efficient design of buildings (except low-rise residential buildings) and building systems. Although the Standard 90.1-2004 user's manual clearly states that Standard 90.1 "applies to all buildings," experience suggests that under certain circumstances, and in more specialized buildings (such as laboratories and vivariums), several requirements in Standard 90.1 are inapplicable or unclear. This article provides an overview of the new standard, as well as some guidelines for how laboratory and high-performance facilities will be affected. Read on in the E-Library!

Ask Your Lab Question

I2SL continues to increase its level of support for the laboratory community. If you have questions geared toward increasing sustainability in your laboratory or high-performance facility, submit them to I2SL to be featured in the Sustainable Laboratory Times for consideration by the entire Labs21 Community.

We are still accepting answers to last month's question. Please submit them to I2SL!
