Issue 1 - January 2009 Dear Reader, On behalf of the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories (I2SL), I am pleased to present the first issue of the Sustainable Laboratory Times. Building on I2SL's co-sponsorship of the Laboratories for the 21st Century (Labs21®) annual conference and workshops, this monthly e-mail publication serves to promote the goals of Labs21 and further I2SL's mission to promote and encourage information exchange and sharing of resources that will help create sustainable laboratories and high-performance facilities around the globe. We hope that as we gain experience with publishing the Times, I2SL will 'build the bridge' to sustain the momentum from one Labs21 conference to the next. This newsletter will become a forum for continued sharing and collaboration in the Labs21 community. As we go forward, I encourage you to offer your ideas and input to help us make the Sustainable Laboratory Times more meaningful to you, your clients, and the industry. If you have any suggestions for features or have a valuable story or experience to share with the Labs21 community, please feel free to submit your suggestions to I2SL. It is our hope that this newsletter can grow to become a valuable piece of industry news that provides you with vital information for creating a more sustainable laboratory community. Sincerely,

This month's spotlight is on... Karl Brown, Winner of I2SL's 2008 Go Beyond Award for Individuals Karl Brown works with the University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) systems to ensure that all laboratory facilities comply with the Labs21 Environmental Performance Criteria for sustainable labs. Karl co-developed the energy efficiency partnership between UC, CSU, and the four investor-owned utilities in California, and ensured that the agreement included an educational component. Since 2004, the partnership has organized nine Labs21 workshops for 300 staff from 33 campuses. Learn more about his and other Go Beyond Awards. If you would like to recognize an organization or individual who has excelled in sustainable practices, keep an eye out for the criteria for the 2009 Go Beyond Award Winners, which will be released this spring. If you have questions geared toward increasing sustainability in your laboratory or high-performance facility, submit them to I2SL and they could be featured in the Times for consideration by the entire Labs21 community. This month's question is from Jeffery Severin at the University of Kansas: "I am working on a project aimed at changing behaviors of fume hood users to lower and/or close sashes. Do you have, or can you recommend, any resources on proper use of equipment to ensure the most efficient operation?" Think you know? Submit your answer to I2SL.
