I2SL Sustainable Laboratory Times

Issue 10 – November/December 2009

In This Issue:

Greetings and happy holidays from I2SL! The end of the year always makes me pause and reflect on all that was accomplished since January. This past year was an extremely busy but also incredibly rewarding one for I2SL. We initiated several major projects, such as the Laboratory Facility Guidelines for Planning and Design, formed working groups that focus on sub-metering and laboratory facility management, established new partnerships both in the United States and abroad, trained hundreds of professionals, and held a highly successful Labs21 2009 Annual Conference in Indianapolis, Indiana. But we're not done yet!

As we look ahead to 2010, I can already see another busy year on the horizon. Even as we continue to follow up on projects, ideas, and partnerships formed in 2009, plans are already well underway for even more in 2010. I'm eager to see what the New Year has in store for I2SL and the entire laboratory community, and I look forward to working with all of you to make 2010 even more productive for our industry.

Ask Your Lab Question

If you have questions geared toward increasing sustainability in your laboratory or high-performance facility, submit them to I2SL to be featured in the Sustainable Laboratory Times for consideration by the entire Labs21 Community.

We are still accepting answers to questions from past issues. Please submit them to I2SL!

This month's question:
Today's science buildings seem to be designed on an outdated principle that pollution is okay as long as you push it out the top of the building and dilute it in the open air. What are some options for designing fume hoods and ventilation controls so that they reduce (rather than dilute) building emissions?

Have an answer? Submit it to I2SL.
Answers are posted on the I2SL website.*
