I2SL Sustainable Laboratory Times

Issue 4 - April 2009

In This Issue:

Greetings!

First, let me say thank you to all those who submitted abstracts for the Labs21 2009 Annual Conference Call for Presenters. I am looking forward to another great year of discussions as we prepare the agenda for the 2009 Annual Conference. Also, I2SL is now officially a member of the American Association for Sustainability in Higher Education (AASHE), which will also hold its "Greening the Campus VIII: Embraching Change" conference at the Indinana Convention Center while the Labs21 Conference is taking place. Attendees from both conferences will have access to the exhibit hall during the evening reception on Tuesday, September 22, and we hope that this will help to broaden the scope of networking possibilities for attendees. Keep your eyes open for more agenda and registration announcements in the coming months!

Sincerely,

I2SL's Spotlight On...

Northern Arizona University, Winner of I2SL's 2008 Go Beyond Award for a Project

The new Northern Arizona University Applied Research and Development (ARD) facility on campus features a number of sustainable design elements that certified it as a LEED® Platinum building and brought recognition as a Go Beyond Award winner.

Designed with the Labs21 Environmental Performance Criteria as a guideline, the 65,000-square-foot facility, which includes BSL-2 and BSL-3 laboratory areas, incorporates low-pressure air supply, energy recovery, and daylighting, among other practices.

Learn more about Northern Arizona University's Go Beyond Award for a project, including all the sustainable practices and techniques that were used in this project that sets it above and beyond others in the industry.

Need a Good Read? Check out I2SL's E-Library!

Benchmarking is on the tip of everyone's tongue these days, and provides the opportunity for facility managers and designers to compare their practices with some of the best in the industry. In their paper on action-oriented benchmarking, Paul Mathew of Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Pierre Bull of the New York State Energy Research and Development Authority discuss benchmarking protocols that can be used to specify and compute key energy efficiency metrics and benchmarks for laboratories. Read on in the E-Library!

Calling All Sustainable Laboratory Leaders!

Do you know of an individual, organization, manufacturer, or project that has gone above and beyond the status quo to increase sustainability in daily practices? The 2009 criteria have just been released, and winners will be recognized at the Labs21 2009 Annual Conference. Submit your nominations today!

Ask Your Lab Question

I2SL continues to increase its level of support for the laboratory community. If you have questions geared toward increasing sustainability in your laboratory or high-performance facility, submit them to I2SL to be featured in the Sustainable Laboratory Times for consideration by the entire Labs21 community.

We are still accepting answers to last month's question. Please submit them to I2SL!

This month's question:

Where can we find designers, engineers, planners and product manufacturers that offer solutions for new or major renovations of existing laboratories and other high technology facilities that meet the Energy Independence and Security Act's (EISA's) goals for advanced metering and zero-energy/carbon neutral facilities?

Have an answer? Submit it to I2SL.
Answers are posted on the I2SL website.*

*When submitting your answer, please note if you would prefer that we omit your name and affiliation.
