Since 1999, the Laboratories for the 21st Century (Labs21®) Annual Conference has provided a one-of-a-kind forum for exchanging laboratory design best practices, technologies, strategies, and more, with the aim of improving the sustainability of laboratories nationwide. This year, at the Labs21 2008 Annual Conference in San Jose, California, conference co-sponsor, the International Institute for Sustainable Laboratories (I2SL), will offer a new, specialty track dedicated to creating and maintaining sustainable data centers.

The amount of electronic data in the United States—whether from laboratories, research centers, search engines, banks, or corporate institutions—exponentially increases in volume with each passing day. The solution to managing this influx of data is the construction of high-tech data centers—facilities that feature energy-intensive processing equipment, extensive ventilation and air conditioning systems, and continuous power security and reliability safeguards. As with laboratories, these features can easily multiply a facility’s energy demands by factors of two, three, or more, which can place a significant strain on utilities and corporate finances.

As co-sponsor of the premier high-tech sustainability conference in the U.S., I2SL acknowledges the need for a targeted effort to improve the energy efficiency and reliability of data centers. To this end, the Labs21 2008 Annual Conference will include a full track of sessions dedicated to sustainable data center design, engineering, and operation, including the following:

  • A full-day workshop that will address ways to improve the energy and environmental performance of data centers;
  • A two-day track of technical sessions dedicated to data centers, to be presented by industry experts;
  • An interactive panel discussion with data center owners, managers, and designers; and
  • An evening tour and reception at one of the Silicon Valley’s premier data centers.

I2SL also hopes to leverage California’s industry experiences with data center owners, particularly those within the Silicon Valley, to begin sharing their knowledge with others in the high technology industry—locally, nationally, and globally.

Manufacturers and other organizations associated with data centers are also encouraged to exhibit at the Technology and Services Fair that is held in conjunction with the conference. This unique Labs21 event showcases the latest in cutting-edge, high-performance products and services that can be utilized by high-tech facilities. Learn more about this event on I2SL’s Technology and Services Fair Web page.
